What is a trans brake?

A trans brake is a mechanism used in high-performance automatic transmission vehicles to allow for quicker and more consistent launches during drag racing or other types of racing events. It essentially locks the transmission in both first and reverse gears at the same time, allowing the driver to build up engine RPM before launching the vehicle.

When engaged, the trans brake holds the car in place even though the engine is revving, allowing the driver to release the brake pedal and launch the car with full throttle without the risk of the vehicle rolling forward or backward. This results in faster and more consistent reaction times off the line.

Trans brakes are typically found in high-performance racing vehicles with automatic transmissions, such as drag racing cars, and are not commonly used in street vehicles due to the stress and wear they can place on the transmission components. Proper setup and tuning of a trans brake are crucial to ensure optimal performance and minimize potential damage to the transmission.
